Description Statement:
"My artwork is based off the musical soundtrack piece known as “Signum Malum” meaning Bad Signs or more famously named “Sis Puella Magica”. This piece was composed by the famous Yuki Kajura consisting of orchestra instrumentals and a Latin choir, which are two things I highly enjoy. Even with a silly name, I chose this piece because of its mystical element and a presents of seriousness. The song can be interpreted in different ways by the viewer, changing from false hope to a sense of reality’s despair.
My inspiration was drawn from a similar exercise done by the animators of Disney’s “Fantasia”, where they listened to a piece and drew any lines, shapes, or colors they see in their head. I tried to take it a step further and listen to it again to develop a more solid form. Also, due to lack of space, some lines were cut to prevent clutter. I tried to use different art styles like impressionism, splatter paint, and the use of sponges to get a renaissance look.
I added in some of the mythology of Britain that I thought fit into the theme: the ending of King Arthur where all he worked for was destroyed. There is a silhouette of King Arthur's death in the painting that is close to a famous painting in Gushave Dore’s illustration of Ludovico Ariosto's “Orlando Furiso”.
